“August is an incredibly versatile, knowledgeable, and collaborative musician.

More importantly, he shares his skill set with a warm and approachable demeanor. Our students still talk about the wisdom August dropped regarding improvisation and big band playing—not to mention his playing demonstration!!”

Interested in Lessons?

Here are some of the topics I have experience teaching, and a bit about my pedagogical approach to each:

Upright and Electric Bass

Whether you have a few years of experience playing or you have no idea where to start, I love to teach bassists of all skill levels. I’m a big believer

Repertoire and Improvisation

I’m experienced teaching both classical and jazz bass. For my students, it is important to me that the composers my students are exposed to reflect diverse backgrounds.

Songwriting and Composition

I’ve had original compositions and lyrics recorded and published. There are significant benefits to being encouraged to write original music early in development.

Audition Prep

Trying out for a local or school ensemble? Wanting to apply to Summer festivals? Intimidated by the prospect of auditioning for college? With experience on both sides of the screen, I would love to help.

Professionalism and Career

As someone with a significant amount of experience gigging and recording, I’m passionate about sharing my experiences in the music industry beyond just the technique of the instrument.

Educational Clinics

If you are a band director looking for a clinician to talk about rhythm section playing, big band jazz, composition and songwriting, improvisation, or any of my other areas of expertise, please reach out!
